Beyond the Static Label: How Buyerdock and Domino Printing are Revolutionising Dynamic Packaging

If you visited the Domino Printing stand at the GS1 Global Forum in Amsterdam, you might have spotted something unexpected: a tin of waffles. But this wasn’t just a snack; it was a masterclass in the future of retail.

On top of that tin was a dynamic 2D QR code / iQRcodes™ powered by Buyerdock. This forum proved that the era of static, “print-and-forget” packaging is over. By combining Domino’s variable data printing with Buyerdock’s platform, we showed how one 2D barcode can stay on a product while the information behind it can be updated at any time – for compliance, consumer engagement, or operational needs.

The Power of Dynamic Data: The “Waffle Tin” Story

The event highlighted a critical shift in logistics and marketing. Traditionally, a barcode identifies a product. With Buyerdock and Domino, a 2D barcode interacts with it.

Variable Printing Meets the Cloud: Domino’s high-speed, high-resolution printing allows for unique, item-level QR codes to be applied directly to packaging.
The Digital Layer: Buyerdock sits behind that code, allowing brand owners to update the destination URL or the content/data within the Consumer Web App instantly, without ever changing the physical packaging.

Visitors were given tins of waffles. Scan the code, and you could see ingredients, allergens, recycling information and details about the brand. The packaging stayed the same; however, the information didn’t have to.

Why “Dynamic” Matters for the 2026 Mandates

As the EU Ecodesign (ESPR) regulations approach, brands are realising that compliance isn’t a one-time event. Regulations change, recycling symbols are updated, and supply chain data evolves

The Buyerdock x Domino partnership solves this in three ways:

Regulatory Agility: Need to update a French Triman logo or a Spanish recycling instruction? You can do it 24/7 via the Buyerdock dashboard, and it updates on the waffle tin (or any product) in real-time.

Dynamic Update at Scale: Once the code is printed, brands can update what it delivers digitally – for example, adding new market information or revised guidance, without changing the packaging.

Future-Proofing for 2027: By moving to 2D barcodes now, brands are prepared for the “Sunrise 2027” deadline when 1D barcodes begin to phase out at the point of sale.

Real-World Readiness, Not Just Theory

While many at the Global Forum were discussing theoretical frameworks for the Digital Product Passport, Buyerdock and Domino were busy showing a live, working solution.

“The collaboration with Domino Printing allows us to close the loop between the digital data and the physical product. Showing a live product with a working digital layer behind it confirmed that brands don’t need to wait. The technology is already operational”

Jonathan Sparkes, CEO of Buyerdock
