Digital Product Passports for textiles, fashion and shoes – we’re ready, are you?
With the EU set to approve Digital Product Passports (DPP) in March 2024, it’s time for fashion manufacturers, brands, along with textiles and footwear companies to get started on their journey to compliance.
The EU recently told Buyerdock that the commission will adopt an ESPR working plan, with adoption expected within just 9 months – Q1-Q2 2025. Textile, notably garments and footwear are to be the first category. We’ve built our solution using information given to us by UKFT, DSS+ and UK Government to ensure compliance.
So what are Digital Product Passports?
A digital product passport, or simply DPP, is a QR code that holds any given product’s full life cycle data. It covers how the product is made, how it’s used, and what happens at the end of its life. It also needs to show a products sustainability, environmental and recyclability attributes.
Our DPP is the ultimate connected packaging QR code. Please scan the iQRcode below to see the live digital product passport example, showing all requirements.
How is Buyerdock leading on DPP?
We know that Digital Product Passports are coming, we know they need to be a QR code. But why is Buyerdock leading the way? Put simply, there are other elements that we have that others don’t. Our QR codes are iQRcodes.
- They are GS1 approved, they are built following a strict and verified data structure that is future proofed for the 2027 transition from linear barcodes to 2D barcodes. Put simply, our DPP’s will scan at checkout, all QR codes powered by GS1 will need this function.
- All consumer products require recycling logo’s (such as the Triman in France), unique to each product, in every EU country they need to be in own language, and show exactly what bin each element of packaging needs to go into. They are complex and we have a patent pending tool to deliver them by asking you a couple of simple questions.
- The Digital Product Passport needs to be in all EU languages, just being in English is not good enough. Our app is automatically translated at the point of scan and currently works in over 80 languages.
- When you add product data to Buyerdock (nothing more complex than the data you add to Amazon Seller Central or Shopify), our app is automatically created, zero tech skills are required.
- We automatically produce the QR code, linked to your barcode number (GTIN, UPC). All you do is simply download the image and apply to your care label, hang tag or packaging. Simple!
- Our consumer app also offers you the chance to really explain more about your company, upload how to guides, encourage followers on social media, marketing..and much much more..
